When Apple released iOS 26 in September, much of the fundraising world braced for disruption. Headlines warned that new privacy filters might bury text messages, throttle outreach, or cut visibility in half.

At Synergy, we didn’t brace; we prepared.

For the past six months, our team tested iOS 26 beta builds across hundreds of devices to understand what would actually change for nonprofits. The results? Encouraging. Text visibility and performance remain strong, and response-driven campaigns are outperforming expectations.

What Apple Changed

Three features fueled the initial concern:
  • Unknown Senders Folder – Texts from unfamiliar numbers can now be routed to a separate folder (which, importantly, is not enabled by default)
  • Time Sensitive Notifications – Messages Apple deems “time sensitive” may stay visible for up to two hours before being filtered
  • Enhanced Spam Filtering – iOS 26 tightens spam detection but continues to allow registered, verified 10DLC traffic to pass through reliably

In short: Apple didn’t shut the door... they merely built one that's not in use. The settings shown above as "enabled" are not applied automatically.

What We Looked At

Over the past six months, Synergy analyzed text message behavior across multiple clients and campaigns, comparing prerelease browser data with performance after Apple’s public launch.

Our tests examined:

  • Proxy link logs (direct text URL clicks)
  • Browser share and Phone Device metrics (Safari vs. Chrome and Apple vs. Android)
  • Disaster and Deadline text pushes (e.g., Hurricane Melissa, Government Shutdown) across social service, international relief, and human services organizations

We also monitored message timing, notification behavior, and filtering outcomes across both beta and live versions of iOS 26 to identify any measurable impact on deliverability or donor engagement.

Current Findings

1. Text Visibility Remains Stable

Across hundreds of test devices, we found no decline in message delivery, clicks, or engagement rates attributable to iOS 26.

2. Operating Systems split holds

iOS share is consistent with prior periods, no post release drop.

3. Browser Mix Holds Steady

Safari continues to lead phone-driven clicks, followed by Chrome and smaller in-app browsers. The iOS vs. Android click share remains consistent with 2024 patterns.

4. Campaign ROI is Strong

Disaster-response and deadline-based campaigns launched in the last week (after most iPhone users have upgraded to iOS 26) are pacing ahead of last year’s results in terms of clicks tracked by device type. This includes campaigns tied to Hurricane Melissa and the Government Shutdown which have achieved significant reach (and results exceeding 15:1 ROI).

Why We’re Confident

Our early field tests suggested that iOS 26’s impact on outreach would be minimal (if measurable at all), not monumental, and the data confirms it.

  • No forced “Unknown Sender” prompts were triggered during installation
  • Spam filtering remains default-off, requiring user activation
  • Response-driven messaging continues to perform best, underscoring the advantage of conversational donor communication

“Six weeks into rollout, we see no evidence of decreased visibility or engagement stemming from iOS 26. If anything, response and recognition have become stronger predictors of success.”
Jason Wood, Vice President of Outbound Solutions

What It Means for Nonprofits

The implications for your texting strategy are clear and encouraging, and if you have questions, our team is ready to help guide you in all of these areas:

  1. Stay the Course on SMS/MMS
No defensive pullbacks are needed. Keep using texting as your most immediate, personal donor channel.
  2. Encourage Replies
Build short, conversational prompts that invite interaction (“yes,” “thanks,” “I’m in”). One reply moves you to the main inbox and reinforces trust.
  3. Leverage Registered Numbers
If your organization or partners aren’t yet 10DLC registered, make it a 2026 priority. Registration is deliverability insurance.
  4. Pair Urgency with Clarity
“Time Sensitive” content still performs well, but donors respond best to transparent, specific messages… i.e., what’s happening, why it matters, and how their action helps.
  5. Invest in Transparency and Tone
Clarity outperforms cleverness. Identify yourself plainly and keep your language aligned with your mission. The combination of compliance and authenticity keeps donors engaged.

The Bigger Picture: The Trust Revolution

From Apple’s privacy updates to the expanding role of AI in fundraising, technology keeps evolving, but the core driver of donor engagement hasn’t changed: trust.

According to the 2025 Donor Perceptions of AI report by Nathan Chappell and Cherian Koshy, 92% of donors say transparency about how technology is used is essential, and 69% call it very important. Whether we’re talking about AI-powered personalization or message filtering under iOS 26, donors clearly engage with organizations that communicate openly, respect privacy, and make every interaction feel human. They engage when they trust you.

This shift is a Trust Revolution.

And the Trust Revolution is not just about new iOS updates; it’s about proving credibility in every message. The text messages will still get through in 2026. But will you earn trust with what you say?

Donors are rewarding the organizations with trust if they are engaging with clarity, not complexity. And that’s a message we all can subscribe to.

Where Synergy Goes Next

Our testing will continue through the year-end giving season, with expanded data collection in several areas:

  • Real-world adoption rates of the Unknown Senders feature
  • Performance of Time-Sensitive message variants
  • Impact of sender recognition on re-engagement rates

We’ll keep sharing results as adoption grows and more donors upgrade to iOS 26.

Bottom line: Six weeks after launch, iOS 26 isn’t a threat to donor texting. Delivery will successfully reach your audience, but the real question is will you connect with them?

That's where our team, supported by data from our research and analysis and guided by our understanding of relevance and trust, will confidently help your messages rise to the top.
