There was a time when simply having a text messaging program gave nonprofits a competitive advantage. That time has passed.

Today, the question isn't whether your organization should use text messaging. Most nonprofits already do in some form.

The real question is:

Are you using the right texting strategy to accomplish your fundraising and donor engagement goals?

Too often, organizations begin by asking questions like:

  • Should we use Peer-to-Peer texting?
  • Should we implement A2P?
  • Which texting platform should we purchase?
  • How many messages should we send?

Those are important questions, but they're not the first questions.

The first question should always be: What are we trying to accomplish?

Because technology should never define strategy. Strategy should determine the technology.

Most Organizations Start With the Wrong Conversation

Text messaging has become one of the most powerful communication channels available to nonprofits.

But it's also one of the most misunderstood. Many organizations view texting as a single communication tool. It isn't.

Today's nonprofit has access to multiple messaging technologies, including:

  • SMS
  • MMS
  • Peer-to-Peer (P2P)
  • Application-to-Person (A2P)
  • Broadcast messaging
  • AI-assisted conversations
  • Rich Communication Services (RCS)

Each serves a different purpose. Each excels in different situations. The goal isn't choosing the "best" technology. The goal is choosing the technology that best supports your donors and your mission.

Before Sending a Single Text, Ask Five Questions

At Synergy, we've learned that successful texting programs don't begin with software.

They begin with strategy. Before recommending any texting solution, we help organizations answer five questions.

1. What are we trying to accomplish?

Every campaign should begin with a clear objective.

Are you trying to:

  • Acquire new donors?
  • Welcome first-time supporters?
  • Increase second-gift conversion?
  • Recover lapsed donors?
  • Reinstate recurring donors whose credit cards have expired?
  • Increase event attendance?
  • Support a direct mail campaign?
  • Steward your most loyal supporters?

The answer determines everything that follows.

2. Who are we trying to reach?

Not every donor should receive the same communication.

A new donor has different needs than a monthly supporter.

A mid-level donor should receive a different experience than someone who hasn't given in five years.

Proper segmentation is often just as important as the message itself.

The more relevant the communication, the stronger the results.

3. What is the right communication strategy?

This is where many organizations immediately jump to technology.

We take a different approach.

Sometimes a personalized Peer-to-Peer conversation is the right answer.

Sometimes an automated SMS reminder works perfectly.

Sometimes a personalized MMS with a video message from your CEO creates the greatest impact.

Sometimes texting isn't the first answer at all.

Maybe the donor should receive:

  • a direct mail appeal,
  • followed by a text,
  • followed by a voice broadcast,
  • followed by a conference call invitation,
  • followed by a live conversation.

The strongest donor engagement strategies rarely rely on a single communication channel.

4. How will we define success?

Many organizations measure texting success by:

  • Open rates
  • Click rates
  • Response rates

Those metrics matter. But they aren't the goal.

The real questions are:

  • Did donor retention improve?
  • Did second gifts increase?
  • Did recurring donors stay active?
  • Did direct mail perform better?
  • Did campaign revenue increase?
  • Did we strengthen donor relationships?

Technology should improve fundraising outcomes, not simply generate activity.

5. What happens after the donor responds?

This may be the most overlooked question of all.

A donor replies. Now what?

A donor clicks the link. Now what?

A donor says they're interested. Now what?

A donor updates their recurring gift. Now what?

The strongest donor journeys are intentionally designed long before the first text is sent.

Because every communication should naturally lead to the next meaningful engagement.

Technology Should Follow Strategy

Once these questions are answered, choosing the right technology becomes much easier.

Sometimes the answer is:

  • Peer-to-Peer Texting

Other times it's:

  • A2P
  • MMS
  • RCS
  • AI-assisted conversations

Sometimes it's a combination of several. There isn't a universally "best" texting solution. There is only the solution that's right for your organization, your donors, and your objectives.

Text Messaging Should Never Stand Alone

One of the biggest misconceptions in fundraising is that texting should operate independently.

In reality, the most successful programs integrate texting into a broader donor engagement strategy.

A thoughtful text can:

  • Increase direct mail response.
  • Welcome first-time donors.
  • Deliver a personalized thank-you from your CEO.
  • Recover recurring gifts after payment failures.
  • Invite donors to an exclusive conference call.
  • Share mission updates through video.
  • Gather donor feedback.
  • Support emergency fundraising efforts.
  • Re-engage lapsed supporters.

Every communication reinforces another. That's how relationships grow.

More Messages Don't Build Better Relationships

Donors don't want more communication. They want better communication.

Every text should answer one simple question: Why does this message matter to me today?

Sometimes the answer is a fundraising appeal. Sometimes it's simply:

  • Thank you.
  • Here's the impact you made.
  • Happy anniversary.
  • We couldn't do this without you.
  • We thought you'd want to know.

Those moments create trust. Trust creates long-term supporters.

Why Organizations Partner With Synergy

CEOs and development leaders typically do not reach out to Synergy because they are looking for another texting platform.

They reach out because they want to add phone-based engagement to their fundraising strategy without creating another operational burden for their team, or asking an existing agency partner to become an expert in a channel outside its core discipline.

Synergy is not designing direct mail packages, negotiating with printing facilities, or chasing the latest Meta advertising tactic. We are not attempting to bolt every emerging channel onto our services and become a jack of all trades.

We focus on the phone based donor engagement.

That includes texting, broadcast voice and ringless voicemail, live calling and other outbound strategies designed to strengthen donor engagement and support the work already being done across direct mail, digital, email and other fundraising channels.

Our best partnerships are often built alongside an organization’s existing direct-response agencies and consultants. We bring specialized expertise to the table while respecting the strategies, creative direction and donor relationships those partners already manage.

Nonprofits should not have to become experts in carrier regulations, compliance, 10DLC registration, segmentation, message strategy, artificial intelligence or rapidly changing communication technologies.

That is our job.

Our role is to help each organization determine:

  • which audiences are best suited for phone-based engagement;
  • which technology and approach make the most sense;
  • what message will feel relevant and authentic;
  • when outreach should occur;
  • and how the channel can support the broader donor journey.

From strategy and segmentation through creative development, compliance, deployment, reporting and optimization, we help organizations use the phone intentionally, not simply send more messages or make more calls.

Because our success is not measured by the volume of outreach we deliver.

It is measured by the results our clients and their partners achieve.

The Future of Nonprofit Text Messaging

Text messaging isn't the strategy. It's one of the most powerful tools within the strategy.

Every nonprofit has different goals. Every mission is different. Every donor file is different.

That's why there isn't one texting solution that's right for every organization. There is only the solution that's right for your organization.

At Synergy, we help nonprofits develop communication strategies that deliver the right strategy, the right technology, the right message, at the right moment, creating stronger donor relationships and measurable fundraising results.

Because the future of donor engagement isn't about sending more text messages.

It's about creating more meaningful conversations that move donors closer to your mission.
